Autistic colleagues have incredible talent. But workplaces often don't know how to support them properly.

Ambitious about Autism needed to change that. We built the solution.

The Problem:

Employers want to create inclusive environments where neurodivergent talent can thrive, but they lack practical guidance on supporting autistic colleagues effectively.

The challenge: create an engaging, accessible digital learning resource that helps employers understand autism and implement supportive workplace practices - while being respectful of autistic perspectives and lived experiences.

Our Approach:

Ambitious about Autism approached us with a clear mission. We needed to:

  • Develop WCAG 2.2 compliant learning materials accessible to all users

  • Create visually appealing content that simplifies complex information

  • Ensure the learning experience is inclusive and respectful of autistic perspectives

  • Deliver the solution using modern learning technologies (generative AI)

The primary audience included HR professionals, team leaders, and managers responsible for workplace culture and employee wellbeing. Secondary audiences were colleagues working alongside autistic team members.

Building the Solution:

Accessibility-First Design:
We built the entire learning experience with accessibility at its core. Following WCAG 2.2 guidelines, we ensured all content was perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.

This included:

  • Careful colour contrast consideration

  • Text alternatives for all images

  • Full keyboard navigation

  • Compatibility with assistive technologies

  • Audio options for all text content

Learners could access content in whatever way worked best for them.

Subject Matter Expert Collaboration:
We worked closely with subject matter experts to ensure content was not only informative but also sensitive to the lived experiences of autistic individuals. This wasn't about theory - it was about practical, respectful guidance.

Modern Learning Technologies:
We leveraged generative AI to deliver the solution efficiently while maintaining quality and accessibility standards.

The Results:

Ambitious about Autism praised the learning solution for its clarity, sensitivity, and practical focus. They specifically commended us for working to deadline and creating a learning experience that met the brief completely.

The course now provides employers with practical guidance for creating inclusive environments where neurodivergent talent can thrive - addressing a real organisational challenge while promoting understanding.

What We Learned:

Accessibility isn't a checkbox - it's fundamental. When you design with WCAG 2.2 compliance from the start, you create better experiences for everyone, not just those using assistive technologies.

Working with subject matter experts and respecting lived experiences is crucial when creating learning about neurodivergence. This ensures content is both accurate and sensitive.

The Bottom Line:

At BB Visual Ltd, we love working with charities, supporting neurodivergent people, and making learning that makes a difference. Our work with Ambitious about Autism demonstrates our commitment to creating accessible, impactful digital learning solutions that address real organisational challenges while promoting inclusivity and understanding.
